Inner Shaman Adventures - The Way of the Shaman

After my cacao ceremony, where I was asked to find a teacher, I found a course that resonated. I had read Michael Harner's, 'Way of the Shaman' a while back and knew that in Shamanic circles he was viewed to have integrity. So I contacted the UK Faculty of the Foundation for Shamanic Studies and went to the basic workshop taught by Marta Niccolai.

I danced and sang, drummed and rattled, swam and retrieved. Under the guidance of the Shaman I was able to journey deeper into the heartlands of the other worlds.

Yet most of all I listened, listened deeply to truth and allowed it all to resonate with me and my growth.

In one session, I was told by the spirit of a stone, 'Follow my heart, it will lead me in the right direction, even when alone I am on the right path. But, see things how they are not how I would like them to be. A tiny action contributes to the greater whole, allow yourself to be cleansed by spirit and consider all the elements as a guide. Every challenge can be overcome, don't take life so seriously.'

After the weekend I felt alive, vibrant and keen to keep exploring. Later on that week, fresh from a cancellation from a Consultant's appointment, I could hear Wimbledon Common's call and I felt bound to respond.

As I walked on her familiar pathways, I felt myself rejoice in this reunion. Her energy entered me and I felt swallowed by her power, strength and teachings. It was like being with a long lost friend whose connection traversed lifetimes.

In the common, I danced my spirit animals and cried their song. And then I watched them run around me as I entered deeper into the Common's womb and felt a song burst forth that I sang over and over again.

'Power comes from within.
Energy is all there is,
Love is all there is,
I am all there is.'

Until different songs that also came from nowhere kept pouring forth.

I found myself singing for nature, her pain and incessant torture, I sang in love for her and for all that is included in her. Words, song, words, song, words and song kept pouring forth as my heart opened in honour of the power within me and my ancestors, the planet and the elements. Rain washed my face and hair clean and as I finally entered Richmond Park. I saw the deer prick their ears in interest, staring at the woman who couldn't stop singing songs so deeply honouring the source.

Until I could sing no more.

It was the best cancellation of a Consultant's appointment I have ever had.

Aho.

Inner Shaman Adventures - Cacao Ceremony 22

St Ouen's beach - taken by me

I decided to journey with cacao alone to deepen my connection with her and continue the work.

I opened space, set up my altar and then cooked, sang, rattled, danced smudged, and called in the spirits - whilst allowing her to bubble and melt and become thick enough for drinking.

I sat in front of cacao, in front of the altar, and prayed my intentions to create space in me for my next steps, whatever they may be and I drank her deeply, breathing her in. I pulled the card, 'Courage.'

I laid down to the sound of drumming and instantly I was on St Ouen beach, in Jersey. I walked to the edge of the sea and found myself swimming in very dangerous rip tides, the waves huge and overwhelming as the surf crushed my body repeatedly. I became aware that my understanding of the sea is so very different when I am at the edge compared to being in its midst, but as I saw a dolphin nearby, I understood I would also never have the perspective of the sea the dolphin has. I rode the waves back to the shore and walked towards a tunnel and gate, which opened up to a jungle.

As soon as I was there a jaguar was beside me. As I walked deeper and deeper into the jungle she padded alongside. Soon I found the clearing and waited on my tree stump for Old Mother Cacao. The jaguar paced around me, unable to settle, until Old Mother Cacao entered.

The drumming took over and I wove in and out of consciousness, I felt the drum on my base, heart and throat chakra - every beat dug a deeper hole. Soon black sludge vomited out of me and with every drum beat a little more until black poured out at an alarming rate, my body too small to have physically kept all this in.

As soon as the black leaves, my body became clear and I started to shake violently on the floor. I shook until colour entered each chakra and I lay there, the brightest rainbow. Old Mother Cacao walked up to me and blew mapacho on to me and said, 'Very good.'

'Allow yourself to shine, my darling. Do not be afraid of who you are. You need to take me further, take me to those who are suffering.'

'You need to take the next steps in Shamanism, you need to find a Master.'

I agreed I would.

'The jaguar is your spirit guide, she will protect you in the lower world.'

Glowing, I hugged Old Mother Cacao and she entered into my energetic body. The jaguar and I walked back to the gate and I told her that I would return.

Once I returned to St Ouen, I walked back to the edge of the sea and then swam in her magical waters. The sea was much calmer and I surfed the waves with ease, playing in the water.

Aho.

Inner Shaman Adventure - Hoska Ceremony

As I entered the check-in area at the airport, I saw my accidental Ayahuasca doula and we greeted each other like long lost friends.

  ‘Are you going to Aniwa?’
  ‘Yes, I am!’

Little did I know that this would be a weekend of synchronicities, magic and some deep healing. I was blessed to meet with some of the most powerful Shamans on the planet and was a part of some very different ceremonies, stories, discussions and rituals. To go through all the experiences would be tantamount to a novel but when I came back to London to finally move house, I did so with a renewed sense of wonder at the magic this planet holds and a deep sense of gratitude to my ancestors, the elements and the Grace that weaves my life together.

Whilst there I met a Shaman called Anthar Kharana who led some of us in a hoska ceremony as part of creating and building a labyrinth over the four days we were together. I had been involved in rapĂ© ceremonies and during Aniwa had many opportunities to work with tobacco, but hoska is known to have a softer response and was new to me. I was intrigued to see what the medicine would bring.

We sat in a circle and Anthar spoke about the labyrinth and the medicine it creates and how we could be a part of the magic it held. We all agreed that we wanted to be a part of creating something loving on the island, a space that would provide others the levels of transformation we all wanted to achieve.

Anthar gave us the gift of song and together we sang about how we are all family, including the animals, wind, stones and the elements, how they are a part of us and we are a part of them. As we sang, I felt my heart open and be closer to the earth and her magic, I felt a sense of aliveness and a deep communion with all beings.

As Anthar delicately, and with great respect, imparted the medicine, it worked immediately and I came into contact with the women from my two ancestral lines. The Scottish on one side, the Italian on the other and between them they formed a great river of tears. In their tears I could feel their strength, pain and hear their stories. I was told that my sisters and I are the bearers of our ancestral pain, their heartbreak, love and wisdom.

I saw those women crying, expressing their deepest pain, trauma and tragedy and my tears joined theirs - I couldn’t stop crying. I was with them, I could feel them. In that moment, I understood that the blood contained in my veins was much more than fluid that delivers nutrients and oxygen – it also holds history and destiny.

In a vision I saw that my sisters and I expressed this suffering and knowledge differently, particularly with the way we approached relationships. We three, different branches of the same river, navigating the connections in our life, were trying to make sense of the inherited knowledge with our own karmic ties.

I was told that part of our mission on the planet today was to heal ourselves as well as our ancestral pain. We were placed here to start the process of healing so that future generations will be born clean of historical trauma and make way for a new way of living.

So let it be so.

Aho.

Inner Shaman Adventures - Cacao Ceremony 20

In the summer, fresh from her Cacao Shamanista training, my oldest friend agreed to hold a cacao ceremony on magical Wimbledon Common. There were 4 of us and I was blessed to have a deep connection with all of the participants there as well as the common, one of my most favourite places on this earth.

We walked and found a small enclosed area in the woods and set up the space to drink.

My intention was to decide whether to leave my lovely home in Wimbledon and the heart space I had created for myself - my place of self-healing and sanctuary in a place that resonated with my need for urban and country. We were being offered a choice to live in two rooms in a shared space in Wimbledon or to move to our new home further outside of London where space, privacy and peace abounded.

I pulled the card, ‘Transformation’ and instantly I knew what my decision was as I could see how this new change, the next phase of my life, could be a perfect step on my path.

We lay down to journey and Old Mother Cacao came and sat beside me.

‘Darling, the time has come. You are entering the field of relationship on a deeper level. You need a place to root down so you can healthily blossom in love.’

I watched her as she sat there composed, she inhaled her mapacho, studying my situation in detail.

‘You have been waiting for this, aching for it.’

I realised the waiting for the perfect place, and the indecisiveness of my flatmate held its own perfect pattern. Nothing is done by accident on this planet and my frustrations with how I felt things should be rather than how they are melted away.’

‘In your new home you will be in the perfect place to create sanctuary for people. You will support, heal and comfort others on their path when they enter your home. In this space you will find peace – no more constant traffic outside your window shaking your vibration constantly. Remember what Ayahuasca told you about the constant interruptions to your energy fields.’

I remember seeing my auric field being constantly impacted by the unwanted noise and how Aya had told me I would become sick if I was constantly subjected to this sound pollution.

I saw my future as we grew as a family and how the extra people in my life would open me up to new and wonderful experiences.

‘You will expand in love and many people will pass through your doors and feel all the better for it.’

After a while, she looked at me and stated to me that it is time to start working with her to heal others. She stated it is my path to work with her as an equal and support those who need to find answers like I do as well.

‘You are ready my darling, it is time to learn from me in a new way. Use me regularly and let me show your new path will unfold.’

When we came out of the journey I pulled the card, ‘The Lovers’. I realised that a new path to help me refine my reserves of compassion was about to begin.

Inner Shaman Adventures: Jaguar - Love in Motion

What I saw was love in motion.

I watched him fight against the separation of body and spirit that would signify the end of his earthly visit as he recoiled from the touch of chimeric oblivion. I watched him desperately clinging to his experience of the tangible and substantial.

His physical attachment a Stockholm syndrome - he had forgotten about the oneness he had left when he was brought onto this earth, and I knew he was scared to return. I could see his body had become a captor that was slowly poisoning him, pumping toxic blood to his brain, preventing clarity and impeding peace.

I whispered to him that he was safe, that it was okay to surrender, yet his eyes hardened and ceaselessly he dragged his body to hard surfaces and sharp edges, to sensation and emissions. Stubbornly he lugged his frame from the fringes of unconsciousness and would start his ceaseless, pointless, journey through the house – every room entered, every sensation carelessly experienced. He could no longer tell me to be silent, for he himself was mute, unable to respond.

I watched his fading light struggle against the shadow of death.

This was his final lesson.

Oh Jaguar, I asked you to allow the fear of death to fall from my eyes. You gave me a teacher so profound. The more I watched his senseless struggle the more I realised the importance of surrender. The more I saw his ignorance, the greater I grew in wisdom. The more I saw his fear, the more I understood love.

What I saw was love in motion.

I watched her as she keenly observed every move, interpreted every action so she could predict his needs and wants. She would follow his fingers, arms, legs, face and examine his unseeing eyes for any communication so she could serve, protect and care for him in any way he needed.

Her heart grew and expanded to encapsulate and keep warm. Her love melded and merged, was unconditional in patience as she waded through the shit and urine that continuously emerged. She navigated the dank, dark, interminably stinking endlessness to her days. The sun rose and fell yet she remained constant – consistently caring for the near-corpse that haunted the house and continued to relentlessly breathe in confusion.

Her continued acceptance of his decline and ability to get up another day after the struggle throughout the night. She fielded calls, visits, medication, decisions and the unknown and balanced uncertainty. Protecting the life he has but knowing there is no quality in it left her with a continual push and pull of indecision, yet she persevered and had no regard for herself as she invested her all.

This is another one of her lessons.

Oh Jaguar, I asked you to show me the way of peace. You gave me a teacher so profound. The more I watched her tears fall in sadness the more I realised the importance of detachment. The more I saw her devotion, the greater I grew in peace. The more I saw her fear, the more I understood love.

What I saw was pure love.

Inner Shaman Adventures - Rapé and Sananga Ceremony

I walked into the studio, expecting the next session to be about Shamanic tools and how to use them but the Shaman walked up to me and said, 'Things have changed tonight, we are going to be exploring plant medicine and their role in Shamanism. We are going to work with rapé and sananga.' I nodded my head in assent, I knew what rapé was, I had seen my brother Apé administer it to people prior to the ayahuasca ceremonies. However, I had not tried it because of the incredibly physical responses I had witnessed when receiving the plant medicine. I had seen people coughing, sneezing, going red in the face, eyes tearing up and retching and I had just thought, 'No, not for me.'

Cushioned beds were laid out in ceremonial style in the studio and we chose our places for the evening. We sat and listened to the Shamans talk about the plants, their properties, how and why they are used as well as the side effects after being in contact with the plant. As I was being told more information about what I would experience, I started to shake and feel cold as my old friend fear came in and made itself at home.

I said to the Shaman, 'What if we don't want to do this?'

The Shaman said it would be okay if we decided not to take part but it would be worth asking ourselves the reasons why and think about what was standing in our way. He said, 'Watch me first, understand that this medicine has been administered for thousands of years and you are safe.'

I watched him being served the plant. The plant was mixed and made into small balls and then blown up his nose and his physical reaction was immediate, nothing in Shamanism is pretty and this medicine was no different. It didn't look like fun, it didn't look like my idea of a great night out.

One by one the students were dispensed the medicine and each had a unique reaction to the impact. As the Shaman came to me I said to him, 'Can you make it really small?' He said, 'I'll make it hummingbird sized.' Somehow the quantity being made akin to a hummingbird made the process easier. I liked feeling connected to the hummingbird.

The Shaman told me to hold my breath and he placed the tube to my nostril and blew. The impact was immediate and I could feel my mind clear and it felt like I was experiencing pure consciousness. The physical effects were that I felt my breath become concentrated, my eyes started to water and soon mucus started to flood me and I continued to spit into tissue, allowing my body to clear. The Shaman then blew into my other nostril and I sat still, firm and surrendered to the medicine and its purpose.

The icaro and music were in full force and for some time I sat with absolute clarity experiencing and listening intently to the medicine, although the icaro could not infiltrate the continued silence of my mind.

After a while, the music ended and the Shaman came forward and said he would be the first to take sananga. He lay down and we watched the eye drops be administered and heard him breathe deeply and react physically to the painful contact. We were told that the initial pain would feel more than we could bear but it would gradually become lighter until feelings of blissfulness entered our bodies.

For this part of the ceremony I was the last person to lie down and again I whispered, 'Only hummingbird...' He said, one drop each eye, that's all.' Somehow I knew I could trust him and I lay down with my eyes open. The first drop entered me; I felt instant stinging and both my eyes closed in response, as I was encompassed by the sensation. He opened my other eye and I lay there with the medicine burning me. I felt no other pain than the searing itchiness in my eyes but I maintained concentration on my breath throughout to help me through the process.

Whilst I lay there, I soon felt feelings of bliss and weightlessness enter me. Any fear that I had experienced previously was washed away with feelings of lightness and joy. I felt my body become soft and at peace, and experienced perfect equilibrium. I lay in this state for some time experiencing a sense of harmony I hadn't encountered in a long time.

The Shaman said, 'You have learned something very important tonight about fear, that it doesn't always tell the truth and is not something you can trust.'

As I was making my journey home, I felt very aware of my surroundings. I walked down the escalators and heard a woman singing for charity, she sang 'I could have danced all night.' I gave her some money and asked if I could listen. An audience of one, I sat and listened intently to her voice and it felt like I had been given another beautiful icaro that night. When she finished we hugged and I thanked her for her gorgeous voice and floated home.

Aho.

Inner Shaman Adventures - Cacao Ceremony 19

I walked into the Shaman’s circle with a renewed interest in shedding what does not belong to me anymore, a wish to peel off that which stops me from stepping into my own power. As the energy of 2016 dissipated into mere fragments that are now memories, I felt a resurgence of energy to embrace 2017 and carry on my Shamanic work and delve further into the depths of my own psyche and self-healing.

I pulled the card, ‘Completion’ and the picture was of the last piece of the puzzle being placed on the third eye of the Buddha. I felt the card was saying I was coming to a point of completion and would be starting anew this year with a fresh set of challenges to undertake.

I drank the cacao and lay down to journey.

‘Honey, don’t spread yourself so thinly. This stage is just a series of stages and you are always ending and beginning anew. Life is a process of endings and beginnings and you need to remain focused. Don’t say yes to everything. Always go back to your Ayahuasca lessons. ’

I noted that I had already started saying yes to everyone and everything – I felt out of step with winter and its retreat within and had already started spring and summer too early. Even I knew what happened to daffodils that bloomed too early and I realised I needed to conserve my energy and allow myself to be mindful of the seasons and what they represent.

‘Take care and listen to your body, darling. You need to prepare it for when you bring new life into this world. The journey into motherhood may be sooner than you think. The process of birthing needn’t be a baby but of projects, new phases and dreams. You need to be physically ready to undertake the challenges ahead.’

As I felt drowsy in my warm cacao cacoon, and knew that sleep was just a deepening surrender into my own body, I realised how much I had prevented my body from maintaining its usual routines in a bid to incorporate more into my life. I kept pushing my body and not respecting its limits.

‘Darling, what are you feeding your body? If you want to incorporate higher levels of energy and continue the process of letting go what prevents you from stepping into your power... You need to discard the heaviness of dairy.’

I felt myself baulk at the decision to follow a vegan diet, knowing the hassle it would cause in its wake. It wasn’t until a few days later when I read an article my brother had posted did I become certain in my choice, knowing it was the right path for me.

‘Starting your new course in Shamanism will be good for you – much will come from it. You will see new challenges will be presented to you through this.’

I was about to start my journey around the medicine wheel the next week, not really knowing what it would be about except knowing that I had been called to undertake it. Even when I tried to ignore thoughts of the course, it would keep pushing its way to the front of my mind until I had surrendered and accepted that I needed to attend.

‘Just remember to always make decisions in alignment with who you are and your own truth.’

After the journey I pulled the card, ‘Creativity’ – I could see the dance of life being depicted, in tune with the elements. Afterwards, I read Osho’s words, ‘Whatsoever you do, if you do it joyfully, if you do it lovingly, if your act of doing is not purely economical, then it is creative. If you have something growing out of it within you, if it gives you growth, it is spiritual, it is creative, it is divine. You become more divine as you become more creative.

Aho.

Inner Shaman Adventures - Cacao Ceremony 18

Cacao calls me in my dreams.

I sat in The Shaman's space for the last time this year and reflected on the journey I have undertaken. As the autumnal feminine grows, the nights become darker and warmth travels to Southern climes I realised I felt a stronger need to be in my own space to sit and listen to nature's call.

I came to cacao with the intention to integrate what I experienced and to gain further clarity on my new plans for the next year. I pulled the card, 'Experiencing' and I saw this woman who was revelling in the present moment and in communion with a tree. I understood that a part of integration is to be in the moment, realise my part in nature and to always heed her call.

I lay down to journey and fell in and out of consciousness. As I came back into consciousness I felt a complete sense of peacefulness and nothing else and realised that experiencing is about appreciating the moment that I am in. As I lay there I let go of the expectation that Old Mother Cacao would join me. There was no need to force the situation.

  'The flow is the plan.'

Suddenly, I had a vision of me with a baby at my breast and feeling a complete sense of calmness. It flashed away again and I was in darkness.

Soon after Old Mother Cacao arrived and she gave me a pipe. We sat in front of each other and took turns to blow the smoke on each other's body, providing our interaction with the creation of a sacred space. Old Mother Cacao was starting to teach me the ways of a Shaman.

'Soon you will start to work with plants differently. However, don't forget ayahuasca's lesson. Write. Integrate. Speak. Remember. Implement.'

I nodded and knew that my new job and relationship had taken up so much of my head space I had no time to sit with the work ayahuasca had given me.

'You need to plan Peru. It is no coincidence that so many people want to sit in the circle of the Mamitas in Peru with you.'

I saw a vision of him, some of my friends and my sister sitting in a circle in front of the Mamitas in Peru - waiting for the medicine to take effect. To make this vision happen I would need to focus steadily on my own goals as I know that I have a tendency to spread myself too thinly and try and encompass all the needs, priorities and goals of others.

The Shaman asked us to bring our future selves in front of us. In came a heavily pregnant me, she waddled towards me and said, 'I'm so proud of you. You are going to make a great mother. Remain in the flow and surrender. Don't worry if life does not work in the order you have wished it to be - life will manifest as it is meant.'

I pulled the last guidance card, which was 'The Fool', the card had a picture of a man holding a bunch of flowers stepping off a cliff. The description says, 'The card indicates that if you trust your intuition right now, your feeling of the 'rightness' of things, you cannot go wrong. Your actions may appear 'foolish' to others, or even to yourself, if you try to analyse them with the rational mind. But the 'zero' place occupied by the Fool is the numberless number where trust and innocence are the guides, not skepticism and past experience.'

I am ready to be guided by my feelings of what feels right.

Aho.

Inner Shaman Adventures - Cacao and Hawthorn Ceremony 17

**Warning - long post**

I arrived at the retreat centre alive, alight and flying. Ibiza and Jersey had been overwhelming in the most positive ways but as soon as I returned on English soil I realised I hadn't grounded and could not feel the presence of my body. Energy was swirling within and my brain couldn't settle - I was unable to concentrate on the moment and be fully present. The vessel I had been given in this lifetime felt unable to contain me.

I had so much to integrate from the festival, travelling, yoga, the space I had given myself, the ayahuasca and Ibizan sun. I also had so much to complete as the next stages of my journey unfolded and my manifestations were in harvest. I jumped from one situation to the next in the most unbalanced and uncoordinated ways, my clumsiness reaching new heights.

I knew I needed to retreat, to come back within, to fully centre in on the new energies and realisations I was embodying and integrating. I was so grateful that I had booked the Shamanic weekend months in advance so I could integrate my new world order.

The first night we drank mugwort under the autumnal dark moon beside the fire, all of us contemplating the weekend ahead. As I sat, still vibrating with ayahuasca, I relished the union of her and mugwort in my veins. The darkness of the sky settled and the stars came out to play, in silence I watched the fire lick the air and reach out to warm my body.

I was ready for cacao. I needed her to help me start the work.

I told the Shaman that my intention was to ground myself after the onslaught of last month and to figure out what to do with the new in my life.

Aho.

The card I received was 'Thunderbolt' - the picture of someone meditating as the world around them experienced destruction. I could see that was me watching my world completely sweep itself into the new but that in order to benefit I needed to remain calm.

The Shaman had used water that had been steeped in hawthorn and sunlight and mixed this in the with Shamanic dose of cacao. Somehow the hawthorn took the slight edge of bitterness away. Both plant medicines work on the heart and the healing of emotional wounds and somehow I felt there was still some healing I needed to achieve in order to fully take advantage of the changes life was throwing my way. I was able to drink more than I was used to. I drank my fill and lay down.

Old Mother Cacao appeared and I said, 'I have met a man and I don't know what to do.'

'Darling, stay strong. You are a woman now and in the last year and a half have a learned a new way of relating. Remain steadfastly firm in your womanhood. You come from a long line of women who were very strong, but also limited by the men in their lives. In this lifetime, you are here to break that cycle. It is no coincidence that you and your sisters embody an independence the women in your bloodline could have only wished for. You are to be inter-dependent, not dependent. He is a piece of your puzzle. We brought him to you because he could be a stable foundation from which you spring from and grow. You will push each other on to new paths.'

Settled in the peaceful consistency of singledom, I had become used to independence, to the joys of living and loving myself alone. The predictability and effortlessness of waking up and being with myself felt like a natural state of being and suddenly life decided to throw me this lion maned curveball. This man had left spasmodic disturbances in his wake and rearranged a new world order for me to continuously practice my continued journey of surrender. He excites and frightens me at the same time and this, spinning with the work ayahuasca has initiated within me, I felt at a loss with how to embody the new.

'Your gift was your heartbreak, in that space you not only survived but you flourished. Use it to remind you that you will continue to grow and learn, even in the most adverse circumstances. There is no need to be afraid - even if this relationship fell apart it would be a gift for your growth. You have nothing to fear from this man - only more lessons to learn. Give each other the gift of time and allow the path to open up naturally. Do not force anything - everything will be okay even when you think it's not.'

'Realise what you want. But don't forget your path.'

Ayahuasca had summarised my path and called me a Shamanic Yogini, a description that encapsulated both the discipline and wildness within. She had told me that I am not to be defined by any relationship, again Old Mother Cacao said to me.

'Darling, you will be a partner and a mother, but first and foremost you are a Shaman and you will follow that path always, it is innate within you. You will open your retreat centre and provide sanctuary for others who are in need of space. You have come so far and embodied so much, the universe can see that you are working hard - the tools for what you want to achieve are already within.'

Old Mother Cacao then transformed into Maestra Ynez, one of the Mamitas from my Ayahuasca ceremonies. She sat in front of me with her pipe and blew smoke around and all over me. I sat in a cloud of tobacco and was told that I am protected.

'Smudge yourself regularly. You are very open right now. Protect yourself.'

I felt such all consuming love... such metta for myself, the Mamitas, this man, my people and for the Shaman. My heart opened and bloomed with such intensity I felt tears spring and flow. I saw my women around me, my sisterhood, and felt blessed with their strength and love. I realised how they reinforced and supported my path as we walked together towards surrender.

Then a memory of waking up after my ayahuasca ceremony appeared. Ape, Marie and I woke up at the same time. We looked at each other, smiled and then started laughing together. We all held hands and in that moment I realised we are all family.

My future self came to me - she was calm and stable. She said to me, 'Don't worry, darling. Remain strong and in your truth. You are in flow and life will happen.'

Aho.

Inner Shaman Adventures - Cacao Ceremony 16

I have lost my voice.

Not metaphorically or symbolically. I seriously and truly heard my voice become this deep husky baritone on Monday before it faded to nothing on Tuesday.

By Saturday, the sound of my high pitched Jersey infused utterances became a mere memory and so began my apprenticeship in the art of loud whispering and dramatic facial gestures accompanied by coughing, sneezing and feverish panic. I was fortunate that in six days my body had recovered enough so I was able to find my way to the Shaman's circle and hear the wisdom of Old Mother Cacao.

We went around the room and stated our intentions. I whispered, 'Hi, I have lost my voice...' and then out of nowhere I said, 'I have come to find it again!'

And then I whispered my original intention, 'I also want to look seriously at my priorities regarding my career as at the moment as I am so confused.' Aho.

The Shaman placed the cards in the middle of the room and spread them out and asked us to pick a card, of course the only card I was ever going to pick was, 'Silence'.

I know I am not alone when I say my current job isn't working for me. I have started rethinking my personal reasons for becoming a social worker and whether I want to carry on in the statutory sector or be more creative in my approach.

Recently, I have been thinking about a conversation I had with my sister, about if she was ambitious. She stated to me, 'I am not ambitious but I like to be known for doing things well.' I sat with that for a while and agreed with her statement. I have never been ambitious. I am not hungry to rise in management or earn vast amounts of money, but I like to be thought of as a person who can do things well, and with integrity. I am starting to think it's not possible to do that in my current job anymore.

I drank in as much cacao as I could, resisted the feelings of rising nausea the taste invokes and lay down to listen to the silence.

She spoke to me, 'You are sick because you are in dis-ease. You are run down and dealing with a constant source of underlying stress. You are not born to cope with large amounts of stress, you are much happier when your job requires less from you so you can devote your energies to the creative.'

'You are born to be imaginative and experimental - whether that is in your career or personal life. Honey, you are going to die, you may as well enjoy the journey from womb to ashes. Do what you are passionate about, what makes you feel alive. There is not enough time for the mundane.'

I sat beside Old Mother Cacao and came up with reasons why I should stay in my job. I have already trained to be a social worker... What if there isn't the right job for me..? What if I can't make enough money..?

She said to me, 'Who do you want to be? Just a Social Worker?'
I replied, 'Well, no, not just a Social Worker...'

'You are a multi-faceted human being. You have a list of things you would like to achieve. Who cares if you are or are not called a Social Worker. You want to write, become a yoga teacher, grow in yoga and shamanism - live your life holistically. Find a job that is in alignment with the flow of your life. Follow your own heart.'

Out of the journey, we were asked to pull a card and I received, 'Letting go.' As I looked at the card I saw water drops fall from the leaf back into the pond - back to the source. I saw that I needed to let go of my identity as a Social Worker so I could find the job that is right for me; where I am given the opportunity, time and resources to do it well. I know that when I let go of who I think I am, who I really am is allowed to shine through.

Aho.

Inner Shaman Adventures - Cacao Ceremony 15

It had been two months since I sat with the Shaman. During that time I thought of Old Mother Cacao often, realising how she is now a part of me and I am a part of an ever increasing community who is learning to reconnect with our plants and trees.

I sat in the circle and told the Shaman, 'I have been working on the path of self-love and self-worth for a while now. I know something is going to happen this week which will make me put all my work into action. I have come to cacao for some support. Aho.' I pulled the card, 'Trust'.

I drank in as much cacao as I could muster before I felt my body heave in response.

I lay down and heard Mother Earth say, 'You came from me and you will return. You are always a part of me. You are protected.' I could feel her solidity underneath me and I knew I was being held.

For a long time I only felt bodily sensations, I couldn't see Old Mother Cacao and so I consciously allowed myself to relax.

   'Stand your ground.'

I saw Old Mother Cacao beside me and I went to sit at her feet but she always remained by my side as equals, indicating that we are all equals on this journey in life.

'When you challenge authority, you are providing them a chance to learn too. By expressing self-love in motion you are showing that you are worth protecting. This is a lesson for you to realise there is no need to have fear in standing up for yourself. You are worthy.'

'Embody the warrior's spirit. No one is served when you play small.'

I could remember times when I have allowed myself to be talked down too, to be made small and feel unworthy. For a long time I never felt I was deserving of being treated properly, and I would capitulate to those I thought knew better and became oppressed. I would dumb myself down to make others look good.

No more. I know it is time to stand in my own power and trust that I know and understand I have the capacity to change a situation. My position of victimhood is outgrown and I will no longer be controlled by fear. I always have a choice, even if I don't like it. I can always create change.

'It's not what we do, it's how we do it.'

I felt loving warrior energy course through my veins as I felt support from Old Mother Cacao pulsing through. I felt excited... and prepared.

She said, 'My darling, remember the journey you had when you saw yourself on a path, and when you followed your intuition it led you to dance through life. You saw how the road lit up bright yellow as you placed your foot on each paving stone. Remember that vision where you loved and trusted each step you took, knowing that you were on the right path. You are on that path now - dance!'

The Shaman asked our future selves to enter the journey, she said they had a gift for us. I saw myself a week later and she gave me a diamond. Suddenly a memory returned of a client that I used to work with came to mind. I could hear him shouting, telling me, 'You're f**king gold you are!' I looked at that diamond, saw that it had withstood an immense amount of pressure to become so beautiful. I felt tears spring to my eyes as I understood that I am going through the same process.

After the journey I pulled the card, 'Rebirth.' It felt potent as I honestly feel a new woman is emerging from these old bones. I am walking my talk. I am starting a new era.

Aho.

Inner Shaman Adventures - Cacao Ceremony 14

In the stillness, there was movement.

In the still black sky, the world was to be blessed with the light of the new moon. The stillness of darkness, the movement of light. As the moon phase transitioned, I stirred from the stillness of sleep as I had experienced the movement of a nightmare. I woke up in tears and didn't know why, somehow depths had reached my shallows and I was overwhelmed.

The tears did not stop and a question was on my lips.

'What if..?'

Suddenly I was pierced with regret and decisions I had taken in my life seemed wrong. Retrospective movies played out in my head as my body trembled and my heart contracted in pain. I called my friend and she soothed and bathed me with the voice of wisdom and compassion. I rocked and rolled but was then cooled and calmed. After, I felt tender, raw, but able to get out of bed and start the day.

I realised I had been forcing myself to move on more quickly than I was ready, trying to figure out, plan and execute. I have been eager to birth and manifest a life I want but without due processing of the emotions of moving on and letting go. I have been trying to build without the necessary foundations in place. In the name of movement, I forgot about stillness.

The next day I sat in the Shaman's space, ready to be with Old Mother Cacao again. I told the Shaman that my intention was to cultivate patience.

I pulled the card, 'Trust.' It was of a person leaping into the unknown into the glowing pink. 'That which can be taken away from you is not worth keeping, and that which cannot be taken away from you, why should one be afraid of its being taken away? It cannot be taken away, there is no possibility.'

Oh fear... I see you now. You are shapeshifting into regret and forcing me to look at my world from a space of scarcity. I see I need to trust the world and understand that regret is of no use to me. I am where I need to be.

I drank in as much Cacao as I could.

After grounding us, the Shaman asked us to send love to those who have hurt us and suddenly I saw him. I tried to send him love but all I had were words and I stood and spoke to him in a dismal attempt to try and resolve regret. Yet I became involved, had forgotten the Shaman and had forgotten why I was there.

After a while Old Mother Cacao came for me.

  'Honey, what are you doing?'

I felt her gentle hands on my arms as she guided me away.

She sat me on a small stone wall in a forest and rolled mapacho for us to smoke together.

'This time to yourself is for you to fast forward your spiritual growth. If you were in a relationship right now you would not have the time or energy to devote to this important stage in your life. Become self-sufficient. You are on your way to becoming a Shaman and wise crone, trust all that is happening to you. Don't allow regret to disable you.'

We smoked. In the stillness of the forest, I watched the movement of whispy vapour dancing in front of us.'

'We know what it is that you want. Let us arrange it for you. Stop trying to force it. All you need to do is to let go and TRUST.'

  'Become still in the movement.'

The Shaman asked us to bring in our future selves. I saw myself sitting in a hut in Peru.

'Don't forget Peru and your yoga teacher training. Concentrate on manifesting these aspects of your life and everything else will fall into place. Your intention for this lifetime is to effect positive change in yourself and others - keep hold of this. Always remember your intention.'

I saw myself in the retreat centre I will one day be a part of, the Shaman was there and she was dancing with wild abandonment. I saw people leaving their sadness at the door and finding pure joy within. I was there, able to create this space.

I pulled the card, 'The Master' - I know I have been given the tools to be the Master of my own life.

Aho.

Inner Shaman Adventures - Cacao Ceremony 13

Fresh from the sweat lodge, I walked into the Shaman's circle of women. This Cacao ceremony marked a year of my working with the plant in a conscious manner, implementing the lessons she teaches me.

I was asked my intention and I stated that I am here to continue working on my self-love and self-worth. Despite the lessons I am learning and the instructions I am given, I am still uncovering and finding layers and layers of resistance within me. I pulled the card, 'Playfulness'.

I drank the Cacao and lay down to hear what she had to say. At first I fell in and out of consciousness but suddenly my body jerked wide awake and I heard Old Mother Cacao say, 'You need to hear this.'

The lesson from Ayahuasca came through again. I saw a collection of bubbles arising from the same source.

'If you can love others unconditionally, why not yourself? We all come from the same source. We are all one. As we are all one, how come someone be above or below you? Neither one of us is better or worse - we are just helping each other on our path.

'The more you start to feel inner self-confidence and love for yourself, the more you will see that others are attracted to you. Accept and love your abundant inner qualities - when you are happy and at peace, they shine through. You will see then that the right people who need to be in your life will be drawn to you as they bathe in your love, including the one you will want to have a relationship with.

'If you feel uncomfortable in groups or around certain people, question why those feelings are arising and what you can learn from the situation. There are no coincidences in this world, every moment can be used as a tool for growth.'

I asked her, 'What does my card mean?'

'Your confidence is inspired by playfulness. You are naturally a playful person - work in alignment with your natural characteristics, not against them.'

'This year, your shoots are just leaving the soil and are growing slowly and steadily. You can take your time as you watch growth slowly enter your life and address each situation as they arrive.'

The Shaman asked us to bring in our future selves and see what four seeds I needed to plant and to work on.

 My future self told me:
  - Don't worry about getting into a relationship with someone. Enjoy this relationship with yourself.
  - Get out as much as you can - particularly in nature.
  - Have lots of time to yourself to unwind and just be.
  - Keep up with your spiritual practices - keep up your meditation and yoga.
  - Eat home cooked meals with lots of vegetables - eat better than you have been!

Once we sat together in the circle, the guidance card I pulled was, 'Turning In.' The meaning is: 'To develop the knack of taking a distance from the mind is one of the greatest blessings. It is what meditation is all about really - not chanting a mantra, or repeating an affirmation, but just watching, as if the mind belongs to somebody else. You are ready to take this distance now, and to watch the show without getting caught up in the drama. Indulge yourself in the simple freedom of Turning In whenever you can, and the knack of meditation will grow and deepen in you.'

I am ready to enjoy this relationship with myself and accept who I am so I can just be.
